Getting to know Dr. Dromerick...

Dr. Alexander Dromerick will have a bio soon.

Q: What is your favorite book?
A: We were just in Norway, and I have been reading a cultural history of the North Sea called “The Edge of the World” by Michael Pye.  I know, it is pretty nerdy.  But really interesting.

Q: What factors influenced your career choice?
A: It was clear that Neurologists are my tribe, and I liked the intellectual challenge.  As a neurology resident, I fell in love with TBI rehabilitation because it challenged all my clinical skills and the recovery made by patients seemed miraculous.  As for research, everything else is less interesting, and I just keep coming back to it.

Q: What is your favorite movie?
A: Recently watched “The Night Manager” on cable.  Loved it.

Q: Who is your favorite musical artist?
A: Paul Desmond, known best as the alto sax player for Dave Brubeck.  He said he wanted to sound like a dry martini, and he did.   But last night we saw Roy Hargrove, the jazz trumpeter.  Paul might get demoted to #2.

Q: If you could be or do anything else for a career – what would it be?
A: For a while, when the postdoc wasn’t going well, it would have been opening a bike shop.  Now, I am terminally differentiated and I can’t imagine what else it would be.  It’s always been about science and medicine.

Q: If you could live in any other time, what would that be?
A: Medieval/Renaissance period, preferably in Italy.

Q: What is the first thing you do when you wake up/start your day?
A: Consume coffee and three newspapers.

Q: What is one important skill every person should have?
A: Saying no to most requests for your time and energy.  And saying yes to meaningful personal and professional relationships, even if they require lots of your time and energy.

Q: What is a personal fact no one would ever guess about you.
A: I brew beer.  Or I did, until NIH funding got capped.

Q: What is your favorite thing about your career?
A: Every day, I get to learn something new.

Q: What's your favorite holiday?
A: Labor Day—no pressure to buy gifts, cook large meals, etc.  We take Amtrak to NYC and visit the kids and hang out.  All the New Yorkers are at the beach, so no lines.

Q: What's the most unusual thing you've ever eaten?
A: Reindeer in Oslo.  (Poor Rudolph!)

Q: What do you do to keep fit?
A: Walk by the gym regularly and occasionally enter it for a workout.

Q: Do you have children?
A: Yes, Emma and Michael.  Both are living in Brooklyn and working in fashion.  They are way cooler than I ever was, even (and especially!) age-adjusted.  Emma is a manager at Lululemon and is finishing her training in counseling psychology and seems to travel everywhere and know everyone.  Michael and his business partner started a clothing company and design and manufacture their own stuff.  Shamelessly plugging Michael’s clothing company, go to: antlerandwoods.com.  He recently did a collection with Brooklyn Boxing (I know, I gulped too).  That is at: https://brooklynboxingshop.com/collections/miracle-man-collection.  The “Miracle Man” is a professional boxer who recovered from a disabling SCI due to osteosarcoma.  So, relevance to ASNR after all.

Q: Do you have pets?
A: Yes, one elderly lab mix rescue.  Who is as much a member of the family as any human.
