Stroke and Brain Injury Rehabilitation Physician

Job Description:
New England Rehabilitation Hospital (NERH) is seeking an outstanding physician (physiatrist or neurologist) to become the third member in its growing Neurorehabilitation program. NERH is one of three acute rehabilitation hospitals serving the Boston metropolitan area and provides the principle training ground for the Tufts University Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. The physiatrist or neurologist joining our group may receive an academic appointment with the Department. The two physiatrists you will be joining are the medical directors of our respective Stroke Unit and Acquired Brain Injury Unit. The Stroke Unit has obtained Joint Commission Disease Specific Certification for Stroke Rehabilitation, and the Brain Injury Unit is now underway with the process of obtaining JC certification for its program. NERH features a thriving outpatient department with therapists who have added training in neurorehabilitation.

Job Functions:
Our program is growing in its emphasis on the long-term management of stroke and brain injured patients, extending from the acute rehabilitation phase to the immediate post acute rehabilitation discharge, and on through long-term follow up. We provide spasticity management, orthotics, psychological support, and a Wellness Center which includes a warm-water aquatic program. The hospital is currently in the process of outfitting our Neurorehabilitation Gym where inpatients and outpatients will benefit from the latest in upper extremity robotic therapies and partial body weight supported gait systems. The incoming physician will be managing half of the stroke inpatient census and participate in coverage of the brain injury unit. She or he will follow their patients in the outpatient setting in a collaborative fashion with the outpatient neurorehabilitation therapists, evaluating spasticity, managing baclofen pumps, and perfoming neurolysis mostly with botulinum toxin. We have a new ultrasound machine which we expect to be useful for neurolysis and for the evaluation of musculoskeletal comorbidities such as the painful hemiplegic shoulder. We are searching for a board certified or board-eligible physiatrist or neurologist with a dominant interest in brain neurorehabilitation, good collaborative and communication skills, and who plans to grow academically. Our new colleague will join us in training residents from Tufts University who work with us on the units. The motivated clinician will find an abundance of research opportunities given our location next to Cambridge and Boston. The region is rich in biotechnology companies eager for collaboration.
